Hangin'A Round was the name of the robotics contest at the 2006 FIRST Vex Challenge. The contest involved building a robot from a kit that could attain a higher score than the opposition by placing the softballs into the colored goals, possessing the tlas ball, and by being parked on the platform or hanging from the bar.

The Game
Competitors were put on two-team alliances in the qualification matches. The competitors could place their robot anywhere on their side of the field. Each match had a 20-second autonomous period. During the autonomous period each robot's program could drive autonomously to score points without human control. Once the 20 seconds were over, the operators controlled them for the following 2-minute operator control period.
Scoring
The robots' main objective was to score softballs into a low corner goal for 1 point each or score softballs into a tall, triangular goal for 3 points each. In the center was a square platform placed on a dolly. On the platform was a raised bar, 36" off the ground, from one corner to the opposite corner diagonally. A robot parked on the platform and not touching the foam mats would win 5 points. A robot hanging from the bar at the end of a match without touching the platform or the foam would win 15 points. A large, yellow ball called the Atlas Ball was placed on the platform at the beginning of each match. The Atlas Ball would double the points that an alliance made by scoring balls in goals if it was mostly on their side. Also, the alliance that scored the most points in the 20-second autonomous period would gain a 10-point autonomous bonus.

For detailed information regarding the Crucifixion itself, see Crucifixion of Jesus.

Christ crucified, painted by Giotto, circa 1310.
The True Cross is the name for physical remnants which, by a Christian tradition, are believed to be from the actual cross upon which Jesus was crucified.
According to early writers, Socrates Scolasticus and others, the Empress Helena (c. 250 c. 330 AD), mother of Constantine, the first Christian Emperor of Rome, at a date after 312 AD when Christianity was legalised throughout the Empire, travelled to the Holy Land, founding churches and establishing relief agencies for the poor. It was at this time that she discovered the hiding place of three crosses used at the crucifixion of Jesus and the two thieves Dismas and Gestas who were executed with him. Through a miracle it was revealed which of the three was the True Cross.
Many churches possess fragmentary remains which are by tradition alleged to be those of the True Cross. Their authenticity is not accepted universally by those of the Christian faith and the accuracy of the reports surrounding the discovery of the True Cross is questioned by many Christians. The acceptance and belief of that part of the tradition that pertains to the Early Christian Church is generally restricted to the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. The Medieval legends of its provenance differ between Catholic and Orthodox tradition. These churches honour Helena as a saint, as does also the Anglican Communion.

Provenance of the True Cross
"The Golden Legend"

The Queen of Sheba worships the wood from which the Cross will be made (fresco by Piero della Francesca in San Francesco, Arezzo).
In the Latin-speaking traditions of Western Europe, the story of the pre-Christian origins of the True Cross was well-established by the 13th century when, in 1260, it was recorded, by Jacopo de Voragine, Bishop of Genoa, in the Golden Legend.
The Legend states that the wood of the True Cross came from a seed of the Tree of Life which grew in the Garden of Eden. When Adam lay dying, he begged his son Seth to go to the Archangel Michael and beg for a seed from the Tree of Life. As he died, the seed was placed in Adam's mouth and was buried with him. The seed grew into a tree and emerged from his mouth.
After many centuries the tree was cut down and the wood used to build a bridge over which the Queen of Sheba passed, on her journey to meet King Solomon. So struck was she by the portent contained in the timber of the bridge that she fell on her knees and worshipped it. On her visit to Solomon she told him that a piece of wood from the bridge would bring about the replacement of God's Covenant with the Jewish people, by a new order. Solomon, fearing the eventual destruction of his people, had the timber buried. But after fourteen generations, the wood taken from the bridge became the Cross used at the Crucifixion of Jesus. Voragine then goes on to describe its finding by Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine.
Acceptance of this tradition
In the late Middle Ages and Early Renaissance, there was a wide general acceptance of the origin of the True Cross and its history preceding the Crucifixion, as recorded by Voragine. This general acceptance is confirmed by the numerous artworks that depict this subject, culminating in one of the most famous fresco cycles of the Renaissance, the Legend of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca, painted on the walls of the chancel of the Church of San Francesco in Arezzo between 1452 and 1466, in which he reproduces faithfully the traditional episodes of the story as recorded in The Golden Legend.
Eastern Christianity
The Golden Legend and many of its sources developed after the East-West Schism of 1054, and thus is unknown in the Greek- or Syriac-speaking worlds. The above pre-Crucifixion history, therefore, is not to be found in Eastern Christianity.
According to the Sacred Tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church the True Cross was made from three different types of wood: cedar, pine and cypress. This is an allusion to Isaiah 60:13: "The glory of Lebanon shall come unto thee, the fir tree, the pine tree, and the box [cypress] together to beautify the place of my sanctuary, and I will make the place of my feet glorious." The link between this verse and the...(and so on)

History
In 1977, South Island School was founded as a nucleus of additional classes to accommodate students within the ages of 11 and 18 from Island School, a fellow English Schools Foundation School. The school moved to its current location at 50 Nam Fung Road in 1983. The first version of the school consisted of the Ching Ling Soong Block and an outdoor swimming pool.
As the school grew in size, more facilities were required. The next big change to the school came with the construction of the Stephen Hawking Building (named after the famous and talented Stephen Hawking), and the swimming pool became an indoor one, allowing all-year round swimming lessons.
By 2003, the school was starting to show its age. A growing student population warranted the construction of a new school block. Construction began on a new eight-storey building that would accompany the C-block and the S-block. By 2004, the new block was completed, and was designated the Da Vinci Building.
The school year of 2007 - 2008 marked the opening of the IB Centre, a section of the school designated for International Baccalaureate students in Years 12 and 13.
Academics
Students in Years 10 and 11 usually complete a GCSE or iGCSE qualification, whereas students in Years 7 through 9 complete a Key Stage 3 course which outlines the fundamentals of GCSE (Key Stage 4).
The Class of 2008 was the last cohort to sit the A Level exams. The current Year 13 (Class of 2009) will become the first cohort to enter the International Baccalaureate Diploma. An alternative to the IB program is the BTEC National Certificate which is starting to be popular in the United Kingdom. Newly introduced to South Island and (equivalent to 3 A- levels)they offer the BTEC business course, BTEC Art and Design (Fashion and Clothing) and the BTEC Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) courses.
At the end of each academic year, Awards are given out to recognize achievement in all areas of school life. Great emphasis is placed on students' personal best. The awards are chosen by teachers, and are usually given to the two best students in each year for each subject. There are also commendations generally awarded to a few students per class, for effort, progress, and achievement.
There is a wide curriculum, and teachers are trained in learning techniques on a basis. Maths, English and Science are standard. Subjects include Physical Education, PSE, Food Technology, Design and Technology, Textiles, Music, Art, Drama, French/Spanish/German, Chinese, Geography, Religious Studies, History which are all compulsory during the KS3 Stage. Media Studies, Economics and Business Studies are then introduced at GCSE, where students have a selection of four subjects to study and qualify in (not including Math, English, or Science) and must choose based on four categories: Creativity, Humanities, Language, and one Extra from any category. Economics and Business Studies can not be chosen in conjunction with each other.
The students taking the iGCSE and GCSE exams in 2008 yielded some of the best results ever recorded.
Houses
South Island School operates a House System, whereby all students are allocated into one of the seven houses.
The members of each house compete against each other in athletics, swimming, music and debating, etc. Each house is awarded points depending on the finishing place in each sport. At the end of the year, the House cup is presented to the house with the highest score in the last Assembly before the summer holidays
Each house is named after a notable person and is represented by a different colour:
Aylward - Yellow (Gladys Aylward)
Hillary - Blue (Sir Edmund Hillary)
Jefferson - Purple (Thomas Jefferson)
Marden - Orange (Anne Marden)
Noble - Light Blue (Christina Noble)
Schweitzer - Green (Albert Schweitzer)
Tolstoy - Red (Leo Tolstoy)
Technology
Over the past years, South Island School has developed a great stress in use of technology. The school's classrooms were upgraded with the installation of interactive whiteboards, while the renovation of the C-block continued. South Island school has started its 1: 1 laptop programme, where students are required to bring a laptop to school, and Macbooks are enthusiastically encouraged.
Activities
Extra curricular activities at the school include squash, netball, basketball, football, debating, swimming, chess, tennis, singing, rugby union and cricket. Every student is obliged to take part in inter-house athletics and interhouse swimming. As well as inter-house competitions, South Island School competes in various inter-school competitions such as basketball and football. The school also has a demonstration team of two Asian martial arts: Taekwondo and Kendo. There are also thriving musical activities culminating in a range of performances throughout the year.
The South Island School Debating Team has been very successful on the Hong Kong circuit in recent years.
The school stresses the importance of extracurricular activity, and each student must participate in at least one Creative, Service and Action-related activity. The school aims to create well-rounded "Leaders of Tomorrow".
